Low light night vision goggles and thermal imagers are both instruments that can expand the observation limits of the human eye, so what is the difference between them? Today we will introduce this for you.
Advantage
The reason why low-light imaging technology is widely used in night observation by the armies of various countries is because of its comprehensiveness. Compared with infrared technology, this technology does not require infrared illuminator to emit infrared rays, and the object being observed does not need to have heat. Therefore, it is widely used by army in different environments. When you choose to use infrared imager, you must first consider the possible damage and maintenance of the infrared illuminator, and secondly, whether the object you want to observe radiate heat itself. Low-light imaging technology does not need to consider so much, and can achieve night vision effects by simply using natural light.
The advantage of infrared imaging technology is that it emits infrared light for night vision imaging without the need for external ambient light. The night vision range is wide and is less affected by the environment. It is mostly used in building surveillance cameras mainly because it does not rely on natural light and is suitable for indoor use. The infrared thermal imaging of passive infrared technology is not affected by harsh environments such as rain, snow, wind and frost, and has clear imaging, high accuracy, and can identify camouflage target and resist interference. The infrared thermal imaging system does not rely on natural light like low-light night vision devices, but relies on the radiation of the target and the background to generate images. Therefore, the infrared thermal imaging system can work 24 hours a day. Monitoring with thermal imaging is possible even during the day.
Shortcoming
The shortcoming of low-light imaging technology is that it is easily affected by the surrounding environment. It cannot be used under strong light, you may see halo phenomenon in the image. When encountering strong light, the night vision device cannot work, and you will feel dizzy when you see through it. Image effect of low-light night vision devices have poor contrast, flicker at high gain, and are only sensitive to the reflection of the target scene and have nothing to do with the temperature difference of the target.
The disadvantage of infrared technology is that infrared images are only sensitive to the radiation of the target and are not sensitive to brightness changes in the scene. This technology must rely on infrared rays emitted by infrared illuminator. Thermal imaging requires the temperature of the object and the intensity of the infrared rays, which cannot adapt to the monitoring requirements in different environments. Moreover, the thermal imaging is unclear and the sensitivity to the surrounding environment is not strong. Infrared illuminator is easily damaged and require maintenance and replacement.
