Most of the radiation emitted by objects must pass through the atmosphere before it can be detected by infrared detectors. The atmosphere is composed of various gases, dust particles and water vapor. The main gases are N2, O2, and Ar. Other gases only account for less than 0.1% of the total volume. The above three gases do not absorb infrared rays below 15 μm. So infrared radiation below 15 μm can easily pass through the atmosphere and be detected by infrared detection equipment. Therefore, most infrared thermal devices would be set to detect wavelength under 15μm.

However, there are still gases in the atmosphere that can absorb infrared radiation below 15 μm. Based on the absorption spectra of various gases, it is found that in the range of 0.8 to 15 μm, there are three ranges during which the abosorbing is weak. These three ranges are 1 to 3 μm,3 to 5 μm, and 8 to 14 μm, so they are also called atmospheric windows.

Infrared rays within these three bands has good transmission ability in the atmosphere, or you can say, the atmosphere is almost transparent to these three range, so the infrared radiation of objects can easily be detected by infrared detection equipment.Outside these three ranges, the atmosphere is almost opaque to infrared radiation. Most infrared devices use above-mentioned atmospheric windows.

When choosing an infrared thermal imaging camera, you should consider where it will be used. When used between an aircraft and the ground, between an aircraft and an aircraft, or between two points on the ground, the absorption of infrared rays by the atmosphere is different. Generally speaking, 1-3μm is mainly used for high-temperature targets and astronomical detection. Recently, it has also been used in ground observations. The 8-14μm is suitable for observing ground targets, while the 3-5μm window is suitable for detecting distant air targets with high temperature and used in high humidity areas.

That would be all for today’s introduction. Below are some products utilizes thermal imaging technology, you can click to see which one you prefer and then discuss it with us. Hope you have a nice day! Bye!
