In nature, any object above absolute zero (-273.15 °C) will radiate infrared rays. Infrared rays are invisible to the naked eyes. Infrared detectors can detect temperature difference between the target and convert it to image. If the temperature difference between the target and the things surrounding it is larger, it is easier to be recognized by the detector. And if the NETD of a device is smaller, that means this device can detect more smaller temperature differences.
Based on the imaging principle of infrared thermal imaging, often times people would ask whether infrared cameras can penetrate walls or glass?
The answer is no. Infrared rays cannot penetrate a wall. This is because the wall has a certain thickness, which blocks the infrared rays radiated by the target. In other words, it isolates the temperature of the object on the other side of the wall. So naturally, a thermal detector cannot detect indoor targets.
Infrared rays cannot penetrate glass either. Like walls, glass blocks the infrared rays emitted by the target. But people can see a reflected image of theirs on the glass through a thermal imager if they are on the same side of the glass with the detector. This is because the glass reflects the infrared rays we radiate, so we can see ourselves on the glass.
Some people will be confused, aren't infrared cameras also made of glass? The glass of the infrared camera is different from ordinary glass. It is mainly made of germanium, silicon and other materials. These materials have high infrared transmission rate, high chemical stability, strong thermal stability, etc. Its main function is to collect and converge the radiation from objects of infrared radiation.
Although the infrared thermal imaging camera cannot observe targets behind walls and glass, but it can work normally when there is haze, fog or under any bad weather. And it can work normally even when other vehicle with glare passing by. And it would work normally day and night. It is an important extension of human vision and has powerful functions, so some people misunderstand it as being able to "see through everything," but it's not.
Due to these advantages, it is widely used in security monitoring, industry, construction, search and rescue, animal protection, aerospace and other fields.
That would be all for today’s introduction. Below are some related products, you can click to see which one do you prefer and then discuss it with us. Hope you have a nice day! Bye!
